Raj Joshi at work in the field with a camera

About

Raj Joshi

An adventure-travel photographer and expedition leader who has worked on every continent — from jungle and desert to the polar ice and the high Himalaya.

Raj doesn't shoot from a studio. The pictures are made in the field, on the move, and often a long way from the nearest road — on a glacier above base camp, upriver at first light, or waiting out the last minute of light on a desert dune. Leading expeditions and photographing them are, for him, the same job: get people safely to remarkable places, and bring back the frame that proves they were there.

The range is deliberate. Wildlife on its own terms; landscapes shot for the composition the moment demands; the people who make a place; and the expeditions themselves. What ties it together is a documentary honesty — real light, real places, and a refusal to crop a photograph down to something smaller than it was.

Raj also leads journeys with The Adventure Boutique, taking small groups to the places these photographs come from.
